Edgemont Village

north vancouver

Once the Lion’s Gate Bridge was completed in the 1930s, residential development began in the Capilano Highlands, or “The Village”, as locals like to call their neighbourhood.

As more people settled in the area, commercial business was attracted. In 1947, the first shops opened, including a dry goods store, a restaurant, and a pharmacy. As the residential area grew, so did the number of businesses. Soon there was a District of North Vancouver branch of the public library, a fire hall, and a community policing office. Today, Edgemont Village has over 70 businesses including dentists, doctors, and other professional services.

It is located in the northwestern part of the District of North Vancouver with the main intersection at Edgemont Boulevard and Highland Boulevard. The commercial centre of The Village is the hub of activity for locals but it is also well serviced by the public transportation system with two major routes that link residents to downtown Vancouver and other areas on the North Shore.

Though largely a residential area, the neighbourhood of Edgemont Village is a mecca for tourists who come from all over to visit the local attractions. These tourist destinations include the Capilano Suspension Bridge nearby, the Department of Fisheries fish hatchery just up Capilano Road, and the Cleveland Dam which provides a reservoir for much of Vancouver’s fresh water.
